Figures released today by the Office of National Statistics show that the number of people looking for and unable to find work in Brighton and Hove has risen by 57 per cent in the last year. Some 7511 people were unemployed in the area last month, a rise of 2726 on the previous year's figure.
Green City Cllr Bill Randall, Convenor of the Green Group of Councillor's on Brighton & Hove City Council, said:
"Across the country, unemployment today reached a 14-year high. Here in Brighton & Hove, 7511 people are trying and failing to find jobs. Such a dramatic increase in local levels of unemployment is a devastating blow for the city.
"Household finances will feel the biggest impact of soaring unemployment levels as the cost of living increases and incomes shrink. The effects will be felt in all areas of daily life, with vulnerable groups hit hardest.
"Losing a job can shatter self esteem and lead to social isolation as daily contact with work colleagues ends. This can have a big impact on mental wellbeing and stress levels, which in turn can damage family life and other relationships.
"The council's front-line services are critical to the welfare of so many households in the city at this time, and we urge councillors of all parties to join us in protecting them in the budget for 2010/201.
"The council also has a large role to play in creating new jobs and retaining old ones. All parties are unified in their support for the development of environmental industries in the city, which could yield many sustainable 'green collar' jobs.
"Now we need to work together in other areas. Tackling rising food prices, for example, by ensuring that all available land that can be used to grow food is turned over to meet the aspirations of the 4000 people on the allotment waiting list and lowering everyday energy bills through widespread introduction of renewable energy, insulation and energy saving initiatives.
"While the roots of many of the problems we face are national - if not international - local action can make a real difference."
