A ‘demonstration’ eco housing development on Brighton & Hove land is proposed as part of a low carbon quarter for Shoreham Harbour.

The project, named PortZED, moved a step closer last week after the government announced it will support Shoreham Harbour’s regeneration with a grant of up to £1.5 million. The eco quarter could contain around 5,000 homes and a similar level of jobs.

Council leader Mary Mears said:
“We support the principle of an early stage demonstration project as part of the regeneration of Shoreham Harbour.

“The ambition to build accommodation with the highest standards of sustainability is consistent with our approach to new development and fits with our pledge to reduce the city’s carbon footprint.

“The interest in developing Shoreham Harbour highlights the commitment of all the councils involved to work together to get the best for our residents and our local economy.

“PortZED has the potential to inspire other developers and residents on what can be achieved. However, it is for the planning committee to make a decision on the final planning application and it will be judged on its merits.”

Brighton & Hove City Council is working with Adur District Council, West Sussex County Council, Shoreham Port and the Environment Agency on the regeneration of Shoreham Harbour.
