City College, the largest provider of Further Education in Brighton and Hove, has announced details of its involvement with the first ever Brighton Marathon which is taking place on Sunday April 18.
The College is sponsoring a special trophy for the first Brightonian male and female runner to finish, which will be awarded as part of the main awards ceremony. With 120 volunteers from City College helping on the day, the College will also have their own water station while construction and art students will be assisting the marathon’s organisers with the many structures that need to be put in place along the marathon route. In a further link between the two organisations, City College is providing the marathon’s organisers with free security training for their staff.
Phil Frier, Principal of City College, said:
“
We’re delighted to have forged this link with the Brighton Marathon in its first year. I think the event will really put Brighton on the map with the great cities across the world and we’re looking forward to the marathon being a sustainable event that the College will be proud to be associated with in the coming years.”
With the Brighton Marathon attracting widespread local and national press coverage, it is expected that 10,000 runners and up to 50,000 spectators will be involved in its inaugural year and the event hopes to grow each year and establish itself as the second largest marathon event in the country.
Race Director Tim Hutchings, a former Olympic 5000m runner who was a silver medalist in the 1984 and 1989 World Cross-Country Championships, said:
“To have the involvement of City College is fantastic and is an indication of how the event is permeating every part of the community. It’s the city’s biggest sporting event so it makes a lot of sense for the city’s biggest College to get involved and I hope it’s a relationship that we can build on in the future.”
