Brighton Switchboard is celebrating its 35th anniversary today.
A spokesman for Switchboard said:
"Thirty-five years ago today, April 26 1975, Switchboard took its first phone call - a wrong number!
"Since that slightly shaky start from a room in the Open Cafe on Victoria Road, the 'Lavender Line' went from strength to strength to eventually become Brighton Lesbian & Gay Switchboard and now Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard.
"Over the years Switchboard has supported thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people and their families and friends with every kind of query, concern and problem, from finding a friendly hotel for the weekend, to managing some of life's most difficult challenges.
"Through our helpline, email, counselling and hate-crime reporting services, we continue with our mission to 'listen, support and inform' and to ensure that LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) communities across the city and the county have a friendly ear, and a shoulder to lean on, when in need.
"Our growth and success has relied on the amazing dedication and contribution of all our volunteers over the years and it is the committment of our trustees, helpline operators, counsellors and back-office volunteers that underpins the organisation today.
"Switchboard will be celebrating it's 35th birthday throughout 2010 and we'll keep you informed about our birthday-themed float at Pride and our planned party later in the year.
"In the meantime, check out our website or get in touch for more information about our services or to volunteer for Switchboard."
