Further to the report that a woman in a wheelchair had been beaten up on Albion Street in the early hours of Tuesday morning (Argus May 26), I can now confirm that action is being taken to clean up the area.
For far too long Brookmead, a temporary housing block which has been closed for a number of years, has been a haven for fly-tipping and squatters and a blight to the neighbourhood.
I have arranged in conjunction with the local Housing Manager, the Environment Improvement Team and the Chair of Tarner Area Local Action Team (LAT), for the community payback team to make immediate improvements to this site.
As of today they have started clearing the wood and other debris that had been used by squatters to start fires in the entrance porch and they will continue with the clean up over the weekend.
I just wanted to reassure residents that action is indeed being taken and we will continue to take a keen interest and work with other service providers to ensure that the squatters do not return.
Our ultimate aim being to return Albion Street back to being an enjoyable and safe place for people to live and work.
