THT (Terrence Higgins Trust) will be holding a free information session at its Brighton centre at 61 Ship Street on November 26 from 10.30am–1pm. The talk aims to give people living with HIV information and advice around the new ESA (Employment and Support Allowance).
Last October the Department for Work and Pensions introduced the ESA and this replaces Income Support and Incapacity Benefit. People currently receiving incapacity benefits will, for the time being, continue to receive this. In the New Year, everyone will start to be moved to the Employment and Support Allowance.
THT is holding this talk to give people information about these changes and answer any queries that people may have. The team can also give advice about which benefits people are entitled to and how to go about applying for them.
Tim Procter, Welfare Rights Advisor for THT in Brighton, said:
“All current claimants on income support and incapacity benefit will be re-assessed. This will involve filling out a form, a medical examination as well as five face-to-face interviews. For some people this assessment may provide them with the support to enable them to return to work. Other people may feel concerned about the pressure of these assessments. At THT we’re really keen to reach people to give advice and support before these changes take place.”
