This is great fun, wonderfully graphically illustrated and tenderly explored story of two young lads looking for and then finding love in New York City. Although it’s a comic book the themes are very adult and the engaging colorful drawing style hides a real emotional and erotic punch in this book.
This is volume one of the ongoing series. In volume one the comic artist takes us on a journey into the life of Evan and Rick. Best friends since they were kids, they stumble right into a hot love affair which ends happily with big love. Meanwhile, the two cuties live together in the city.
The fact that both of them have sex with other men from time to time—whether together or alone— doesn’t harm their relationship. On the contrary, it heats up their passion for each other. The book opens with the lines "
Evan and me are best friends. He's the blond. We're young, but we know our place in life. It's Side by Side."
( see the
second book here: )
The boys face challenges as all modern gay couples do, both in themselves, in the bigger outside world but find the strength and joy in their love for each other. The frothy plot follows their leaving small town American for the big city and the friends they meet and their dealing with modern gay life; porn, sex, drugs and homophobia all feature. Their intimate life is readily explored too and the sex in this graphic novel is depicted with an erotic force. There's lots (and lots) of sex in the book, all depicted in Mioki trademark hyper realistic style and this book would do well as a stand alone erotic novel. More than half the book is them getting it on, so don’t feel short changes by the lack of depth in the plot just sit back and enjoy the pages and pages of hot steamy sex.
If you’re a fan of
Mioki and his uber realistic drawing style then this reissue is a great addition to your collection and if you’re new to this type of graphic novel then what better introduction could you want. Mioki is a well known illustrator and this novel, although light on the heavier difficulties and tribulations of relationships is a wonderful warm and tender look into the lives of these small town boys made good.
It’s warm, funny, sexy and about he triumph of love. So it’s a wonderful read for those who are romantically inclined.
