New health centre to open in Queens Road

A new health centre offering early morning, evening and weekend doctors’ appointments and a walk-in service will open this Wednesday (July 1). Brighton Station Health Centre, run by the private company Care UK on behalf of NHS Brighton and Hove, will open from 8am-8pm, seven days a week.

The health centre is welcoming new patient registrations and provides a comprehensive range of regular health services for registered patients who can make appointments at times to suit them. There will also be a walk-in service which will treat all NHS patients without an appointment for minor injuries and ailments, including patients who live locally, visitors and commuters.

Mark Hunt, Managing Director of Care UK Primary Care said,
“Care UK is delighted that this new facility opens this week to patients for the first time, giving access to high quality health care to the people of Brighton. Through our partnership with NHS Brighton and Hove, everyone in the area will benefit from greater choice about how they wish to access healthcare facilities and treatment.

“Care UK has an extremely high standard of care in our GP practices and walk in centres across the country, with 94% of our patients rating our walk-in centres as either good or excellent. We are confident that the care at the new centre in Brighton will be of a similarly high standard.”

Darren Grayson, Chief Executive, Brighton and Hove PCT, said:
"The establishment of a centrally located GP surgery with extended opening hours, open every day of the year, gives patients more choice about when they can see a doctor. This is great news for local people."

Brighton Station Health Centre, Aspect House, 84-87 Queens Road, Brighton BN1 3XE.

Patients looking to register at the new practice, or to make an appointment, can contact the centre on 01273 203058 or for more information visit the centre from July 1 or view:

Tatchell labels Gordon Brown a 'hypocrite'

Gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell has accused Gordon Brown of claiming to support equality for gays and lesbians while backing homophobic discrimination.

Tatchell was responding to a statement of support from Gordon Brown to the LGBT community ahead of this year's Pride in which the Prime Minister said:
"We (the Labour government) won't ever give up on the fight for equality - we are marching with you every step of the way."

"He claims to support gay equality but his government actually endorses some aspects of homophobic discrimination," said Peter Tatchell of the LGBT human rights group, OutRage! "It supports the ban on same-sex marriage. Civil partnerships are not equality. They are a form of sexual apartheid, with different laws for gay and straight couples. Gay and bisexual men are prohibited from donating blood, even if they always practice safe sex and have tested HIV-negative. Successive Labour Home Secretaries have given visas and work permits to reggae singers who incite the murder of gay people. Such incitement is a serious criminal offence. The government's current Equality Bill is supposed to ensure equal rights for everyone but it specifically denies lesbians and gays protection against harassment. Labour's many commendable gay law reforms are no excuse for its stonewalling on the abolition of these remaining aspects of homophobic discrimination."

"The Prime Minister will host a reception at Downing Street for LGBT rights campaigners and the pink press on the morning of Pride London. Those invited are mostly - not entirely - tame apologists for New Labour. Critics of the government's record, like myself, are not invited. The same selective invitation criteria was applied when Gordon Brown hosted a Downing Street reception for LGBT campaigners in March. An insider tipped me off that my name had been removed from the invite list, at Gordon Brown's personal request. He was apparently still angry that I had heckled him over his government's erosion of civil liberties, when he opened the Taking Liberties exhibition at the British Library late last year.

"It doesn't matter to me that I haven't been invited. What angers me is the principle - the way the Prime Minister invites and fetes mostly tame pro-Labour loyalists in the LGBT community. It is a manipulative tactic by an insecure government that knows its record on LGBT human rights is not as glorious as it claims.

"Instead of remedying the remaining issues of homophobic discrimination, Gordon Brown seems more interested in isolating and excluding LGBT voices who continue to insist on full LGBT human rights," said Mr Tatchell.

A spokesman for Number 10 said,
"This government is very proud of its enviable record on LGBT rights since the late 1990s, often in the face of fierce opposition. What matters is not who was or who was not invited to a reception in Downing Street but what we have already done, such as same sex couples getting immigration rights, repeal of armed forces ban, an equal age of consent, lesbian and gay couples being allowed to adopt, repeal of Section 28, employment equality, civil partnerships introduced, discrimination outside the workplace banned and guidance to schools on homophobic bullying published. And last year the UK signed a United Nations Declaration calling for an end to laws that make homosexuality illegal. More recently, we have also made incitement to homophobic hate a crime. No one should underestimate this governments commitment on equality."

Greens call for 'living wage' for all agency staff

Green councillors have called for all agency staff working for Brighton and Hove City Council to be paid a living wage of at least £7 an hour.

“Any less just isn't enough to maintain a decent standard of living in this city," said Ben Duncan, Green City Councillor for Queen's Park. "Recent figures showed that more than 1,100 council staff were paid less than £7 an hour - mostly agency staff and cleaners."

Cllr Duncan made his comments after a council meeting discussed handing responsibility for the pay and conditions of agency staff from councillors to the Head of Personnel. "I'm sure the council's Head of HR will do an excellent job - but this sort of decision really must be taken by councillors with a democratic mandate."

Cllr Duncan, who hopes to be elected Green Party MP for Brighton Kemptown at the next General Election, added:
"It's a false economy for the council to use agency staff on low wages and with poor working conditions. Not only do people forced to endure this sort of work have a higher reliance on benefits and council services to help make ends meet, they enjoy less training and job security, which quite naturally means they're less committed to the job - and are more likely to quit if they get a better offer elsewhere."

Book review: Major Benjy by Guy Fraser-Sampson

‘Any news?’, ‘a new Mapp & Lucia book!’ ‘ No!’, oh but yes dear reader this E.F.Benson inspired book takes up the idea of quite what the other delightful residents of Tilling do, in this case Major Benjy, in between shouting Quay-Hai, playing golf and the obligatory rubber of bridge.

This book covers the further adventures of the character from the much loved Mapp & Lucia series of books. It shines a gimlet eyed light into the domestic dalliances of the Major and a few of the other more delightful of Tilling's Characters, we peep into Quaint Irene’s love life, the Majors bedtime habits, the Wyse’s ins and outs, Divas kitchen and even a quick look into the infamous Miss Mapps secret garden.

Written in a loving style, with all the wit and bitchy intrigue of the original books, this funny work inserts itself carefully but with determination into the Tilling cannon. The writing is more contemporary than Benson’s while retaining the typical delightfully twisted plot devices of the earlier books.

I adored the original books and was like Mapp, a little suspicious of this interloper; would it have the right tone? be the ‘right sort’? be able to breathlessly gossip and all the time keep the cruelty and brutality of Tilling society under the perfectly pressed cover of delightful social intercourse? I wasn’t disappointed; in fact I laughed out loud, always the greatest gift from a book.

This is a very good book, like watching one of those high-class drag queens who only ‘do’ Piaf or Garland and get it so, so right, but with a modern knowing, ironic wink. Like the originals I read it far too quickly, it just flew past and I just hope that Guy Fraser-Sampson will stop what ever it is he is doing and get on with writing the next book, please let it be the secret depths of Godiva 'Diva' Plaistow.

Theatre review: Deceptions by Michael Hootman

The two-handed psychological thriller is practically a mini genre. Expect reviews to call it a 'game of cat and mouse', mention 'the shifting balance of power' and perhaps promise that it builds to 'an amazing twist'. The problem with these plays is that you can't really discuss much of the plot without breaking an unwritten rule of reviewing. Which is a shame as it's hard to get across just how absurd the play is - its inconsistencies and the two characters' lunatic motivations - without a frank and open discussion of the plot. The denouement just about squeaks by - although it's not particularly interesting - but then there's another makeshift 'twist' tacked on at the very end whose weakness is just slightly embarrassing.

Julia Smythe (Michelle Collins) is a psychiatrist whose latest client Adrian Wainwright (Rupert Hill) presents an almost textbook case of easily defined neuroses. It's so textbook that within ten minutes he has found the root cause of his impotence and tries to make a break for it. But Smythe quickly gives another possible cause of his problem and persuades him to carry on the session. But did she do this out of concern for her patient? Or did the thought of a cured client simply make her worry about lost revenue? To give the play its due the two of them certainly carry out the argument about how shrinks just get paid for sitting and listening, that they try and unearth ever deeper problems to make their punters keep coming back, that they prey on those rich and vain enough to pay their fees. But it's not great theatre and the dialogue rarely reaches the level of an internet chat forum on the same topic.

At the end of the first scene something is revealed which alters our understanding of exactly why Wainwright has gone to see a shrink. Then in scene two it goes a little crazy with Smythe acting in an insanely unprofessional manner just because of being ever so slightly riled by Wainwright. She takes her revenge on him by trying to convince him that he's mad - which would be fine if the play presented her as completely barking instead of just a bit bored of her job.

Although Collins' performance is not terrible she hardly gives the character any life - she appears to resemble a cipher who has to jump through a number of plot hoops. Though it's possible that could well be a reflection on the writing as much as her acting ability. Hill is perfectly acceptable in the role of the Wainwright - and again he's not working with much - but at a night at the theatre 'perfectly acceptable' isn't really a good enough reason for buying a ticket.

Deceptions' saving grace is that despite everything it isn't boring. If only it had been a little less - or a great deal more - ridiculous it might even have made quite a good play.

Deceptions is at the Theatre Royal, New Road, Brighton until July 4.

Gordon Brown sends a message to the gay community in London

The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown has sent a message to the gay community in London in the lead up to London Pride on July 4.

In a letter from Downing Street he said,
“I’m very proud of all that this Government has achieved on LGBT rights these last 12 years – often in the face of fierce opposition. From equalising the age of consent, lifting the ban on military service, introducing gay adoption and creating civil partnerships to scrapping section 28, introducing the Gender Recognition Act and banning discrimination at work and in the provision of goods and services, we’ve taken massive strides towards equality. More recently, we have taken action to tackle homophobic bullying in schools, made incitement to homophobic hate a crime, secured unprecedented lesbian fertility rights and introduced the Equality Bill.

“But I also know that we quite simply couldn’t have done it without the activism of our out and proud LGBT community, so I hope you’re very proud of what your campaigning has achieved: you’ve changed laws, you’ve changed lives, you’ve changed the world.

“Together we’ve done a lot – but we can never be complacent and must always be vigilant to see that progress isn’t reversed.

“This government is committed to standing at your shoulders in the fight for equality and we are guided by one very simple principle when it comes to LGBT rights: you can’t legislate love.”

New research into drug and alcohol use by LGBT people

New research into drug and alcohol use by lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people living in Brighton & Hove has been published by the University of Brighton and Spectrum as part of the Count Me In Too Project.

It reveals that LGBT people are more likely to take recreational drugs than the general population. However, as the research notes, the most common types of drugs taken by LGBT people are not those targeted for intervention by drug services.

Despite revealing similar levels of binge, hazardous and harmful drinking as the general population, the research showed that LGBT people were concerned about their alcohol use. The majority of those who drank alcohol did not know where to find support if they needed it.

The findings underline the importance of the LGBT commercial scene in the social lives and networks for LGBT people. Yet they also point to the lack of safe, alcohol-free social and networking spaces, particularly for isolated and excluded members of the LGBT communities.

Last year, the government’s new ten-year drug strategy called for specific research into patterns of drug use and service needs among LGBT populations to inform future policy and service provision.

Andrew Kilkerr from the National Treatment Agency at the Government Office South East called the report.
“An example of good practice, enabling commissioners and providers to review current provision and to ensure they meet the needs of the local LGBT community.

“This report provides unparalleled evidence upon which to base co-ordinated action between sectors and agencies to respond to LGBT-specific needs,” said Arthur Law from Spectrum LGBT Community Forum, community partners to the project.

“It makes a necessary contribution to local agendas for tackling social exclusion, health inequalities and crime. City commissioners have undertaken to respond to the findings in future strategic planning.”

Lead researcher on the project Dr Kath Browne said:
“We found that within the LGBT community alcohol is tied up with social networking, which means that if you don’t drink it is difficult to engage with the LGBT scene.

"We also found that a large number of respondents were concerned about their alcohol use, but were not accessing services. Therefore one of the key recommendations from the report is to better target health promotion campaigns to this community.”

The Count Me in Too Project is a community university partnership between the University of Brighton and Spectrum LGBT Community Forum. Throughout the project, the research team worked with statutory, voluntary and community stakeholders to ensure that all the findings inform mainstream service and strategy development and ongoing community engagement with LGBT people.

The report can be downloaded from:

Sussex Beacon Garden Gadabout

Many of Brighton’s beautiful private gardens will be open to the public this July in aid of The Sussex Beacon. Brighton’s largest open garden scheme, Garden Gadabout, will feature 70 private gardens, divided into 16 easy-to-manage trails all shown in the Gadabout guide. Patron of the Garden Gadabout, Carol Klein of Gardeners World, has helped turn this into a major community calendar event for Brighton.

This is a wonderful opportunity to visit some beautiful, inspiring and unique private gardens, as well as helping to raise essential funds for the Beacon. Many gardens offer the opportunity to enjoy a delicious array of homemade cakes and teas in beautiful surroundings, as well as buy plants and see exhibitions of art. The Garden Gadabout is a celebration of diversity and creativity, from small gardens bursting with colour to a fern-filled chalk garden, from the atmospheric beauty of Monks House to a garden planted with dustbins!

Organised by a small team of volunteers, the 2009 Garden Gadabout will, it is hoped, raise more than £25,000 for The Sussex Beacon. Entrance is £1 donation per garden on the door, or newly launched this year are the one- and two-day passes for access to all gardens on the trail, at £6 for one day and £10 for two.

Passes can be purchased in advance from the Sussex Beacon Shop in St James’s Street or the Brighton Dome on 01273 709709

Beacon marathon to expand numbers running

The Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Cllr Anne Norman, attended the launch of The Sussex Beacon Half Marathon 2010 last month, at the Hotel du Vin, where organisers announced their intention to change the race from a local community event to a nationally known brand.

This year was the 19th running of the Half Marathon, which sold out for the first time following a 20 per cent increase in participation on 2008.

Out of 6,083 runners entering the race, 4,611 finished. 81 per cent of runners were unattached to running clubs; 67 per cent of non-Brighton & Hove residents stayed overnight with 51 per cent staying in hotels and B&Bs.

95 per cent of participants were satisfied or very satisfied with the race organisation with 92 per cent registering their intent to race again in 2010.

The 2010 Half Marathon is on Sunday February 2010.

New community group for people with HIV

Lunch Positive is a new voluntary group which will provide a weekly lunch club for people living with HIV and their carers. It will open every Friday from July 17 at the Community Room at Dorset Gardens Methodist Church (off St James Street) in Brighton.

Gary, Lunch Positive's service facilitator, told me about the origins of the project and what it means for people in Brighton who are HIV positive.

"We’re a group of people who used to volunteer for Open Door and when it closed down last year we saw that although other services were given to other providers, there wasn’t any provision for a lunch service where people could meet socially and get a nutritious, balanced meal. After approaching various organisations such as the diocese of Chichester, and getting funding from the National Lottery, we managed to secure the use of Dorset Gardens Methodist Church as a place in which we could cook and serve meals. The church itself has been extremely helpful. Though I should say we’re not a faith-based project - we work within the chuch building but are completely independent of it.

"We aim not only to serve food and provide a place for people to meet, but also to help those who can’t access a good diet at home in other ways. For example there will be opportunities for those who use the service and who would like to, to work with volunteers in the kitchen so they can gain confidence and skills in cookery. So in that sense I see Lunch Positive as empowering its users, giving them the opportunity to socalise and spend time with each other once a week, something that has not been happening for many people since Open Door closed.

"We ask that any new client contacts us first before their initial visit. Then they would be greeted on arrival and a volunteer would be there to show them around and spend some time with them as coming to a new service for the first time is not always the easiest thing for people to do. They will also be given some very basic guidelines around conduct, for example around confidentiality which is very important to us.

"The basic structure is we open at noon so people can come for tea and coffee and a chat or read the papers. Lunch is served from 1 till 2 and then after clearing up and maybe talking about what will be happening within the service in the following weeks, we close at 2.30pm.

"We ask for a donation of £1 - which helps cover the cost of the food we have to buy."

Gary continued,
"If I had to sum the service up in a sentence? Well being for people with HIV encompasses many things - an informal place to meet, good diet and a space to share with others are important aspects of this- which is why we are here."

If you are interested in becoming a member of the group, as either a client or a volunteer, Lunch Positive can be contacted on 07846464384 or via their website www.lunchpositive.org

Gay Tory Councillor steps down

After mounting allegations about his claiming expenses but not attending council or community meetings, the gay councillor for Goldsmid Ward, Paul Lainchbury, resigned from the council last month, citing ‘personal reasons’.

The date for the by-election is Thursday July 23 and it is expected to be a tight-fought contest.

If the Tories lose the seat they could lose control of the council. Voting was close at the last elections, with Labour losing out by a handful of votes to the Tories in the ward.

After their showing in the recent European elections, the Greens are confident of taking the seat.

The Tory candidate is Andrew Wealls, the Labour candidate is Lis Telcs, the Greens candidate is Alexandra Phillips, the Lib Dem candidate is Lawrence Eke and the UKIP candidate is the former talk radio presenter Mike Mendoza, who has come under fire from the Greens for allegedly making homophobic comments.

Mr Mendoza was not available to Gscene for comment.

15,000 needed to install Aids Memorial: The final few steps

As the reality of the Aids Memorial being unveiled in late autumn gets ever closer, the Aids Memorial Project has decided to work in partnership with Sussex Community Foundation, using the Aids Memorial as a focus to build a permanent fund to support the LGBT community in Brighton & Hove in the future.

Sussex Community Foundation is a charity that inspires local giving to meet local needs. It helps local people and organisations to support the causes they care about in Brighton & Hove.

At present it manages funds on behalf of American Express, Veolia, Hans and Marit Rausing, Comic Relief and others, helping them to reach the local community groups that they would not otherwise know about.

Set up in 2006 by the Duke of Richmond, the Foundation has already supported several LGBT services in the city, including Brighton Ourstory, the Gay Elderly Men’s Society (GEMS), The Sussex Beacon and the MindOut project. In total the Foundation has given out £1.3 million in grants to community groups across Sussex, including £416,000 to 153 groups in Brighton & Hove.

Once the Aids Memorial is complete, the Foundation will work with representatives from the LGBT community in the city to build a fund that will maintain the Aids Memorial and provide grants to address the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Brighton & Hove and to support the development of the LGBT community within the city.

A further £15,000 is needed to pay for the installation of the Aids Memorial in New Steine Gardens and to help establish an ongoing fund to maintain it and help develop other LGBT community organisations in the city.

If you would like to contribute, please send donations to LGBT Community Fund (Aids Memorial Project), Sussex Community Foundation, Suite B Falcon Wharf, Railway Lane, Lewes BN7 2AQ or donate online via www.sussexgiving.org.uk

The Sussex Community Foundation will be able to claim back Gift Aid for the project, so every pound you donate is in fact worth much more to the Aids Memorial Project if you are a UK taxpayer.

Kevin Richmond, chief executive of Sussex Community Foundation, said,
“The Foundation aims to inspire local giving to meet local needs. We are delighted to be helping the LGBT community to both commemorate those who have died as a result of HIV/Aids and also build a lasting fund to help the LGBT people in the city to support each other and build a strong, supportive community.”

Lib Dem Cllr Paul Elgood, whose idea the memorial originally was, said:
“We are very excited that the Aids Memorial is nearing completion, and that Romany Mark Bruce has proven to be an outstanding choice for the project. This mechanism will ensure that the final phase of fundraising will be completely open and transparent and ensure that other good causes benefit in the longer term through the Aids Memorial Project. We hope that the memorial will both capture the community’s imagination and create a lasting legacy for those lost to Aids.”

Former Council Leader to run in Brighton Marathon

Despite hating running, former City Council Leader and Labour candidate for Brighton Kemptown, is entering the first Brighton Marathon to be held on the April 18, 2010.

Simon says,
"Because I cycle about the city, and I have entered cycle challenges for charities such as the Argus Appeal, people assume I am a fitness fanatic - sadly I'm not. I do like cycling but I hate running. I found it really tough doing six miles for Sport Relief last year which is the furthest I have run, so goodness knows how I am going to do a marathon!

"However I'm sure this will be an event with a great atmosphere and the effort will be well worth it to raise money for three great local charities; Argus Appeal, Martlets Hospice and the Sussex Beacon. I don't know how I am going to find the time to train but my children are particularly keen to supervise me!"

"I can be sponsored on-line via just giving which increase the value of sponsorship via gift aid."

Pink Paper moves online

The Pink Paper has suspended its fortnightly print and distribution schedule with effect from the end of June, until such time that the economy improves for recruitment, housing and display advertising.

Tris Reid-Smith Pink Paper Editor, said,
“We proudly boast the biggest readership of the free gay press for the newspaper and it is very sad that we aren’t able to continue in our print format for the time being. However, I hope our readers will stick with us, visit the website often and sign up to our weekly email newsletter, Pink Paper Xtra. In return we promise to deliver the country’s premier news and features website for gay, lesbian and bisexual people.”

Kim Watson, MPG Media Director, added,
“The decision to suspend fortnightly print and distribution of Pink Paper has been one of the toughest we have had to make in a long, time but in order to ensure that we can continue providing a service to the LGBT community in future we have taken the decision now, rather than when the situation has worsened to a point that we would need to cease Pink Paper all together. We are looking forward to increasing delivery of our weekly newsletter and ensuring that our website continues to grow in its visitors and interaction. We are also glad to announce that all existing staff will remain with the company to work on Pink Paper online and our other titles.”

The Pink Paper will continue to develop its daily online platforms on www.pinkpaper.com and its weekly Pink Paper Xtra e-newsletter, which was launched this spring.

From July 1 The Pink Paper will focus on delivering news, information, advice, entertainment features and community interaction via its web sites and the weekly e-newspaper Pink Paper Xtra. Advertising sales will continue to be available across these platforms.

The Pink Paper, launched in 1987 as a weekly LGBT newspaper, was acquired by the Millivers Prowler Group in 2005 after the former publishers Chronos Publishing Ltd. had creased to produce the title, due to falling advertising income.

Human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said,
"The loss of the Pink Paper is a big blow to the lesbian and gay community.

"We have lost a major source of news and information. It was an invaluable forum for debate and helped us co-ordinate campaigns against homophobia.”

Millivres Prowler Group also publishes GT (Gay Times) and DIVA magazines.

“I’ve never run a marathon before, but I’m hoping running a route round a city I’m so familiar with will help me make it to the finish line!

“Greens believe the council should be doing all it can to encourage and provide support for participation in many different sports across the city, and at all levels.

“Getting involved in some kind of sport isn’t just great for improving fitness levels: team sports can also help foster a real sense of community, and getting fitter can really help improve people’s self esteem.

“Greens believe schools should be aiming to provide a full, unbroken half day per week of sport for every child, in addition to daily opportunities for physical excercies."

New HIV service to start in July

A new voluntary group has been awarded funding from National Lottery Awards For All to provide a weekly lunch club in Brighton, for people living with HIV and their carers.

Lunch Positive will run every Friday from July 17, opening between 12 noon and 2.30 pm at the Community Room in Dorset Garden Methodist Church in Dorset Gardens, in the heart of the gay village.

The service will offer a healthy and nutritious meal, and provide a confidential, welcoming and accepting space for people to share lunch and find peer support.

The group’s spokesperson said,
“Good diet and nutrition have added importance to people living with HIV, and this is a great opportunity to have a healthy and balanced meal which positive people might not otherwise have access to.

“Equally important is a safe and supportive space to share this; as people often feel isolated by illness and the stigma still attached to HIV.

“The service is inclusive of all people affected by HIV, and the chance to meet over lunch in this informal setting has great benefit in reducing this isolation.

“We hope that the service will have a very positive impact on the well-being of our clients.”

Anti Fascist Conference in Manchester

Following the election of two members of the fascist British National Party (BNP) to the European Parliament last month, Unite Against Fascism and Love Music, Hate Racism has called a joint emergency conference in Manchester on Saturday July 18.

The election successes threaten to normalise the presence of the BNP in mainstream politics resulting in added challenges for the anti fascist movement in next year's local elections.

The BNP vote held still in most regions, following a huge amount of anti fascist activity taking place across the country.

The BNP's electoral breakthrough was achieved on the basis of low voter turnout, mainly by Labour voters.

A spokesperson for Unite Against Fascism and Love Music Hate Racism said,
“We need to strengthen anti racism campaign roots across the country, in particular in Yorkshire & Humberside and the North West, with the view to building a huge campaign base in advance of the local elections next year.”

At the conference there will be speakers, discussion groups, ideas for action and a number of workshops including - Countering racist myths, the media and the role of anti fascists.

The conference is at Manchester Central Hall,
4-5 Oldham Street, Manchester M1 1JQ

Tatchell receives London Citizen of Sanctuary award

To mark Refugee Week 2009, Peter Tatchell was one of three public figures honoured with the London Citizen of Sanctuary Award 2009, in recognition of his work campaigning on behalf of refugees.

The other winners were Labour MP Neil Gerrard and actress Juliet Stevenson.

All three were honoured at a ceremony at the New Players Theatre in London on Sunday night (21), which included a performance of the Asylum Monologues by the troupe, Actors for Human Rights.

London City of Sanctuary is part of a growing network of British cities and towns dedicated to promoting a culture of hospitality and welcome to people seeking sanctuary from persecution, including persecution on the grounds of their politics, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity.

Accepting his award, Peter Tatchell said:
"I accept this award with honour, gratitude and humility. I am just a small part of a vast network of individuals and organisations who support refugees fleeing persecution. Many of these refugees have suffered arrest, imprisonment, torture, rape and attempts to kill them.

"Cumulatively and collectively, we are helping transform their lives for the better. This is hugely rewarding emotionally - for the refugees, and for all of us involved in helping ensure they have a place of sanctuary here in London.

"I would like to pay tribute to the magnificent work of organisations such as the Refugee Council, Refugee Action, Medical Justice, Bail Circle, Bail for Immigration Detainees, No Borders, National Coalition of Anti-Deportation Campaigns, UK Lesbian and Gay Immigration Group, Lesbian and Gay Asylum Team and many others.

"Together, over the years, these organisations have made a huge positive difference to the lives of tens of thousands of refugees."

National Jewish group visits Brighton

Over forty Jewish lesbians and gay men from the Jewish Gay and Lesbian Group, spent last weekend, June 19-21 in Brighton.

The weekend started with a Shabbat service followed by supper on the Friday night. On the Saturday they took the open-top bus ride up to the Devil’s Dyke – many walked and admired the wonderful scenery – others preferred to stay in the bar!

They re-met in the evening on the Beach next to Brighton Pier for drinks and watched the (non-existent) sun go down before going for a superb Italian meal at a local Brighton restaurant. Some members continued partying and savored Brighton’s many gay bars and clubs.

Sunday morning was spent discussing Jewish Sexual Ethics and a great Bagel Brunch rounded off the weekend.

Greens call for action to protect Iranian bloggers

Green Cllr for Queen Park, Ben Duncan has called on all UK bloggers to change the location and time zone details of their blog and twitter accounts to say they are based in Iran.

His action comes after an Iranian blogger contacted him asking for help, stating that Iranian secret police are rounding up people blogging and twittering about events in the country, using a list detailing which accounts are registered in Iran and with this unique time zone.

Ben, the Greens Human Rights spokesperson and Green Parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown said:
“If thousands of us around the world make these settings our own, the hope is that the secret police will be overwhelmed and free blogging and twittering will continue in Iran a while longer.

“Freedom of speech on the 'net - and for journalists in general - must be preserved: it's only if people know what's going on that they can make an informed decision, and no-one will know what's going on if the police are arresting everyone who's trying to tell us!

“So please change these details, even if just for a day or two: it takes less than a minute, costs nothing, and could prevent an innocent 'blogger from a night (or more...) in the cells, and help preserve the free flow of information about political events both inside, and beyond, Iran.”

Tories put city in danger of losing its Fairtrade status

Brighton and Hove Green Councilors have discovered that the council is in breach of its agreement with the Fairtrade Foundation, and is in danger of having its status as a ‘Fairtrade city’ revoked.

In 2004, Brighton and Hove City council resolved to support the Fairtrade label and movement. This meant serving only Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in its offices and canteens.

Five years on, and it has emerged that many of the teas and coffees being served both in the council and in other council run institutions (such as the library) are not Fairtrade.

Green City Cllr Rachel Fryer said:
“What makes this truly shocking is that the council should be leading the way in this city in promoting the importance of Fairtrade.

“Many local cafés and shops are actively promoting Fairtrade, yet the Conservative administration seems to have dropped this initiative like a ton of hot bricks.

“In most cases Fairtrade produce costs the same as non-fairly traded equivalents, so there really is no excuse.

“Brighton and Hove city has long been ahead of the game when it comes to ethical practice. Losing our status as a Fairtrade city would be a real step backwards: so many local residents and businesses try to do their bit, why can’t the council?”

Hotel review: Hotel Pelirocco, Brevity is the soul of lingerie by Eric Page

The launch of the Ophelia Fancy room at Hotel Pelirocco went down very well on Wednesday night (17), almost as well as the unbelievably delicious and shamefully indulgent nibbles supplied by the most decadent catering team in the city, Jamqueen.

This regency bow fronted townhouse hotel is situated on Regency Square, very close to Brighton’s vibrant shopping areas, within spitting distance of the conference centre and a stagger away from the best clubs, bars and restaurants.

The Hotel Pelirocco has established itself as the cities premier Boutique hotel, and the addition of this new room, styled by Brighton’s award winning lingerie label Ophelia Fancy is only going to improve its reputation and choice.

The room, up at the very top of the hotel, around a few sensual curves of the original regency staircase brings you out in a comfortable en-suite space that is beautifully finished with hand made chandeliers, a set of three ‘flying ladies bottoms’ rather than the more traditional flying ducks and finished with the kind of frills, ribbons and tassels that Ophelia Fancy is rightly famous for.

Essex girls Stevi and Em founded Ophelia Fancy back in 2005 and have been terrorising the shores of sunny Brighton with their quirky double-act ever since.

During this period they have successfully decked out the most extraordinary client list ranging from Fern Britton to The Horrors, with their bespoke and inspired revivalist collections.

There’s even a framed selection of their sexy nipple tassels alongside the bed and I was reliably informed that you can ring downstairs and have the set of your choice sent up, chilled if you so please!

The rooms is undeniable feminine and frilly with a slightly dark hint of decadence. Perfect for the Brighton getaway. If you’re a classy dyke with a taste for lingerie & tease this is the room for you.

They are also very gay friendly and happy to host TV’s too, I know because I asked them.

Ophelia Fancy were also launching their new lingerie line called – appropriately enough – ‘Sorry, no vacancies’, it’s fun, has a real austerity naughtiness about it and is of the usual ultra fine hand made quality you’d expect from this award winning company.

This is class, even their wrapping is class. The photographs to go with this are stunning too. It’s an all-round talented cool-a-thon this place.

Check out their website for the new range, I got myself a ‘No 1’.

The Hotel Pelirocco speaks for itself and its service is as good as it’s styling, Book the new Ophelia Fancy room and others at www.hotelpelirocco.co.uk/

Schools Out call for volunteers to walk on London Pride parade

Schools Out are calling on LGBT education workers and supporters of equality in education to march at London Pride, on Saturday July 4.

Organiser Milena Gravenhorst has set up a Facebook group, ‘Schools Out at London Pride 2009’, to bring people together.

Milena explained:
“We all know many LGBT teachers, but very few who are out at school, especially to their pupils. LGBT young people deserve to see role models at school.

"I’m always disappointed I can’t march with fellow teachers at London Pride. The police and the armed forces have a prominent presence now – so why don’t we?

“LGBT teachers have been making a difference to many students´ lives for decades but this fact is neither acknowledged nor celebrated. In fact, in the public eye, LGBT teachers still don’t seem to exist!

‘We also want supporters – of every orientation and gender – to join us and show how many people care about the next generation.”

More and more education workers and students are coming out at school, but the majority still don’t feel safe enough. Schools should be fighting negative stereotypes by including LGBT people, culture and history as naturally as they mention race and gender.

Schools have a legal duty to prevent homophobic and transphobic bullying. This can only be implemented effectively if LGBT teachers and other education staff themselves feel able to be fully out to pupils, staff and parents.

Research has shown that ‘meaningful personal contact’ with an LGB person cuts homophobia by half.

Say no to rogue traders

Brighton & Hove Trading Standards are warning local residents to be on the look out for doorstep conmen after a number of incidents reported across the city since April.

Incidents have varied from bogus roofers and exterior decorators to block paved driveways and gardeners, but all have a number of factors in common.

The callers all appeared at the doorstep uninvited, offered work valued at more than £35 and failed to give the written cancellation rights required by law.

Recorded incidents investigated by Trading Standards over the past three years indicate that there is often an increase in reported activity at this time of year.

The indication is that these conmen are out to make quick cash and prefer to avoid any confrontation which may lead to contact with Trading Standards or the police.

Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, cabinet member for the environment, said:
“We are urging residents to be extra alert over the summer when there is traditionally an increase in doorstep traders. The advice from Trading Standards is to not to engage with these people on the doorstep and to report the incident as soon as possible to Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.”

Anyone who feels intimidated or threatened should call the police.

Brighton & Hove has a ‘Buy With Confidence’ scheme which helps residents find reliable traders.

The companies listed have to comply with a stringent set of requirements before they can carry the prestigious ‘Buy With Confidence’ logo. Consumers and traders can obtain details of the scheme by visiting the web site at www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/brighton-hove or by calling 01273 293340 or 01273 292494.

If you are concerned about doorstep callers coming to your home or are worried about a neighbour, please call Consumer Direct South East on 08454 040506.

Event review: The Great Brighton Treasure Hunt at The Basement by Michael Hootman

Having not been on a treasure hunt since I was a kid I was looking forward to going on one as an adult with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. What kind of people would me and my friend Fizz be thrown together with? Would we have to do anything particularly foolish? And, perhaps most importantly, would we get wet? The people were lovely, there was a minor downpour but by 11pm I thought nothing of disobeying the express orders of the Dome's security guards by climbing over a fence and hanging a lady's bra on the pointing finger of the Max Miller statue.

Round 1 was a series of cryptic clues which led to pieces of treasure hidden in shoescrapers, drainpipes, shop doorways and, in one instant, directly under some crenellations (I took credit for this one as it was my beautifully rendered pictures of a crenellation which secured success.)

In Round 2 each team had to make a piece of conceptual art from the materials provided. For us this included a Christmas tree, some wrapping paper and a empty catering-size tub of mayonnaise. There were extra points awarded for giving a suitably pretentiousness explanation.

Round 3 was a set of pictures of bits of the surrounding area which we had to locate and then note the street they were on. This was tricky as the target might be a small bit of graffiti on a wall in central Brighton. Even cheating by phoning up someone with internet access didn't help. And the evening ended with a traditional pop quiz.

As a logistical exercise, co-ordinating 50 people running loose over the North Laines couldn't have been easy. So hats off to Dr David Bramwell and Lady Rachel Blackman for pulling the evening off with no upsets, missing persons or fatalities. It's planned to become an annual event - and I can't think of a better way to spend a summer's evening in June 2010 than by taking part in The Second Great Brighton Treasure Hunt.

Celebrities inspire young gay people at Stonewall youth event

Actor Sir Ian McKellen, singer Dan Gillespie Sells and champion snowboarder Jo Chastney all spoke at Stonewall’s third annual day for young lesbian, gay and bisexual people (LGBT) last weekend.

The Greater London Authority provided City Hall as the venue, which played host to 140 lesbian, gay and bisexual people aged 16 - 25 from all over Britain. The day was designed to offer practical help about being gay in 21st century Britain.

As well as speeches from celebrity role models, young people attended workshops on realising ambitions and developing confidence, being gay and having faith, getting the job you want, staying safe and healthy and developing campaigning skills.

The day finished with theatre provided by Rikki Beadle-Blair and his troupe of actors, Team Angelica, who showcased plays exploring gay issues – including FIT, Stonewall’s touring play for schools designed to challenge homophobic bullying.

Ben Summerskill, Stonewall's Chief Executive said:
"Recent Stonewall research has demonstrated how the culture of homophobia in Britain’s schools leads to lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils underachieving.

"The Stonewall Youth Event restores confidence to young people and empowers them to enter the world with a more positive attitude towards their sexual orientation in all areas of their life – at home, at school and at work. We’re very grateful to Aviva for making this event possible."

Community Garden safe - for now!

Green Cllr Keith Taylor has brokered a deal to protect a community garden set up on derelict space on Lewes Road in Brighton.

Keith, a ward Cllr for the area, negotiated with owners of the land Alburn Retail Ltd, who have agreed the garden can stay until the land is needed for development.

Keith said:
“This is a brilliant use of redundant space being converted into a real community asset. Hats off to the Guerrilla Gardeners!

“I am very pleased to have brokered an agreement with the owners of the site Alburn Retail Ltd to enable the garden to continue until the land is needed for development”.

“Seeing the results here makes one ask ‘how many other sites are there in the city that could benefit from this treatment?’.

For the past month local residents have been enjoying the recreation space they carefully installed on the derelict site of a demolished Esso petrol station at the corner of Edinburgh Road. They cleared rubble, laid a circular lawn, brought in benches, flower pots, sculptures and other decorations and planted flowers and shrubs into eyesore concrete blocks.

The site had previously been disused for five years but since it was spruced up during a series of 'guerrilla gardening days' it has been well used by residents.

Event review: Sarah Waters at the Old Market by Michael Hootman

Publisher Lennie Goodings interviewed Sarah Waters about her latest book in an event organised by City Books at the Old Market in Hove last night (June 15).

The Little Stranger
is influenced by The Franchise Affair, which Waters described as 'a fascinating and quite repellent novel'. In that book a young girl claims to have been abducted by two respectable women who keep her in their home as a virtual slave. Betty Kane, the young girl, represented the upper-classes' fears of an England which could elect a Labour government. In writing a response to this Waters describes how she was ever mindful of her grandparents, most of whom worked in domestic service.

The Little Stranger is about the middle-aged working class Dr Faraday who believes his luck's changing when he is called to visit a patient at Hundreds Hall, a decaying Georgian mansion inhabited by the Ayres family. But the patient isn't one of the family, instead she's a 14-year-old servant called Betty who is complaining of abdominal pain. Soon the young man of the house, Roddie, begins to suffer visitations from an evil spirit and Faraday sends him to a private asylum. Waters says that although the book is certainly, on one level, a ghost story, it's actually about class and in some ways it's payback for The Franchise Affair's unpleasant portrayal of the British working classes.

The author also gave an insight into the process of writing - and how for her it's mostly about discipline.
"It's like going to the gym - it's terrible starting but you have to force yourself to do it every morning. If writers waited for inspiration we'd never get anything done." She explained how she liked to write 1000 words a day as then she'd have something to come back to for rewriting. Working on a novel involved 'something like putting it through a series of ever finer sieves.'

On giving talks around the world she said how, despite incidents of homophobia, British gays and lesbians were very fortunate. In Warsaw, a very conservative country, she said there was a small lesbian community but that it was, to some degree, 'embattled'. Later in the year she's travelling to St Petersburg for a Lesbian and Gay Film Festival - last year it had to be held in a secret location.

The Q&A session started off with someone stating 'I am a heterosexual man' - rather foolhardy considering the audience were 95% lesbians - and this person then gave a fairly lengthy explanation of why he liked Waters' work, completely forgetting to actually ask a question. Just like a man, I thought, purely interested in his own opinion even when he's supposed to be finding out what the person on the platform is thinking. But by then I had turned a little bit lesbian myself. Other than this small example of male foolishness, a thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening evening.

Entertainers needed for Manchester Pride

The organisers of Manchester Pride, the city’s annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) festival, are seeking entertainers to contribute to the carnival atmosphere over the August Bank Holiday Weekend.

Manchester Pride is encouraging entertainers from all walks of life; individuals, groups and communities, to support the festival’s Big Weekend in the Village Hall on Bloom Street.

The hall provides a safe space throughout the weekend for various LGBT community groups to get together and promote their causes. Entertainment helps to bring the event to life as hundreds of festival goers visit the hall during the Big Weekend.

Jackie Crozier, festival manager of Manchester Pride, said:
“We’re keen to get a diverse range of entertainment in the Village Hall this year. We’re encouraging anything from urban art groups to sports games and musicians such as steel drummers and small bands. This is a real chance to support the local LGBT community and have a whole lot of fun doing so.”

Tories form coalition with right wing Poles

The Tories intend to aligned themselves with the homophobic Polish regime led by homophobe, Jaroslaw Kaczynski in the European Parliament.

Simon Burgess, Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Brighton Kemptown, which includes Brighton’s Gay Village, said:
"I am appalled that David Cameron has split the Tories from moderate conservatives in Europe. He has linked up with the homophobic, climate change deniers 'PiS' of Poland. Cameron went to Warsaw to stand alongside Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the PiS leader, to celebrate the foundation of a new league of eurosceptics in the European Parliament."

Leading Conservative grandees including Chris Patten and Leon Britain have criticised his move. Mainstream media organisations have been ignoring the story.

Simon Burgess said:
"I understand that many voters want to punish the mainstream parties because of expenses abuses in parliament but it is so important that people vote constructively and progressively in the European elections, sadly they may not.

"I share public anger at seeing an expenses system being abused by MPs of all parties. I have already said that if elected as the MP for Brighton Kemptown I intend to commute between London and my home. There may be times when I need to stay in London, but I would not submit any claims for re-imbursement from the ACA (renamed PAAE), which covers second homes and overnight accommodation etc. What is far more important to me is to play a part in re-building some trust in our political process - otherwise we risk a rise in extremist movements driven by hate. Independent scrutiny of salaries and expenses are needed. In comparison with most of the constituents I hope to serve an MPs salary is a good income."

Dogs Trust Shoreham - rehoming appeal

Dogs Trust Shoreham is desperately looking for a loving owner for an active dog!

Pansy is a seven year old Collie bitch who is currently living at the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Shoreham. She is a real favourite with the staff at the centre as she loves to have cuddles and spend time with people.

Pansy is a really active girl who would love to go to someone who spends their free time out and about on country walks. She does have a high chase instinct so will not be able to be walked off lead, but enjoys long walks, the longer the better! This also means that she cannot live with cats or any other small furry animals but can live with children over the age of 12.

Tracey Rae, Manager of Dogs Trust Shoreham, explains:
“Pansy is such a loving affectionate girl who is desperate to find a new home. She would love an active family with people who have lots of time to spend with her, and also seems to have springs in her feet as she can jump any height fence, so will need to be supervised in a garden! If you want a wonderful companion who will love cuddles as much as very long walks, then please get in touch with us here at the centre. ”

If you think you can give Pansy the perfect home, please contact Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre Shoreham on 01273 452576 or visit the centre between 12.00 midday and 4.00pm - any day except Tuesdays, when the centre is closed.

Dogs Trust is working towards the day when all dogs can enjoy a happy life, free from the threat of unnecessary destruction.

Council rent rise reduced for Council tenants

Rents for council housing in Brighton & Hove are to be reduced following a decision by the government to reduce the percentage increase.

Average rent increases for council tenants in Brighton & Hove were set at an above-inflation rate of 5.45% (£3.50 a week) as a result of the government formula that works out the percentage increases nationally.

Last month the government announced it had revised its formula to reflect low interest rates.

It means that council tenants in Brighton & Hove can look forward to an average rent rise now of just 2.37% or £1.52 per week. The adjustment will backdated to 6 April 2009.

Councillor Maria Caulfield, Brighton & Hove’s cabinet member for housing, said:
“We’ve tried to keep rents as low as possible and we’ve been campaigning, along with other councils, for fairer rents for our tenants. We are extremely pleased that the government has responded by lowering the percentage increase.

“The rent reduction takes into account the current economic conditions.”

In addition the council will be compensated for the loss of rental income from the reductions in rent increases by an increase in housing subsidy.

The percentage rent increases for council homes are worked out through a national formula set by government. This year’s increase was initially based on the retail price index in September 2008 (5%), plus a further half a percent, plus an adjustment for target rents.

New report names and shames countries where homosexuality it still illegal

A new report published by the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (IGLA) highlights that homosexuality is still illegal in 80 countries, and in five of these it is punishable by death.

State Sponsored Homophobia, the third annual report from the ILGA, has been welcomed by Green MEP Jean Lambert. She said:
"This report serves as a reminder of the terrible choice that LGBT people all over the world face: to risk persecution, imprisonment and even death because of their sexuality, or to deny their sexual or gender identity to escape unbearable discrimination.”

Lambert said in December, 66 countries signed the United Nations Statement against the criminalisation of homosexuality. She continued:
"It's a sad truth that these states are significantly outnumbered by those 80 countries where homosexuality is illegal. It's up to us to exert pressure on leaders at all levels to end this persecution which stems from homophobia."

The report follows one in March from the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, that found homophobia was still widespread across Europe. Eastern Europe is one area of concern, and the Green Party’s LGBT Group will work alongside Polish Greens to help tackle the discrimination in that area.

During IDAHOBIT last month, police used violent tactics to break up a peaceful Slavic Pride march in Moscow, where 30 to 40 people were arrested, including human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, who was released later without charge.

The first Baltic Pride march took place in Riga last month, despite an earlier attempt by city authorities to cancel it, with representatives from Pride London taking part.

Greens top EURO poll in Brighton and Hove

The Green Party is celebrating its spectacular performance, topping the European elections in Brighton and Hove, taking 31% of the popular vote in the process. They now intend to focus their efforts on the the forthcoming by-election in the Goldsmid Ward and the General Election.

Cllr Bill Randall, Convenor of the Green Group on Brighton and Hove Council said:
“We are confident we can repeat our performance in the General Election and the Goldsmid by-election.

“In the elections to the European Parliament, we finished 10 per cent ahead of the second placed Tories, and polled more than double the number of votes cast for Labour, who came in a poor third.

“Our only regret is that Cllr Keith Taylor narrowly missed out on becoming the second Green MEP in the South East Region. Under a fairer voting system he would now be on his way to Brussels with our Green MEP Caroline Lucas.

“The success is testament to the huge amount of work by our growing number of members and supporters across the city and by the performance and industry of our 12 Green city councillors and Caroline Lucas.

“The days of Labour claiming that only they can keep out the Tories are over. Goldsmid and Brighton Pavilion will be two straight fights between the Tories and us. We believe we will win both, and we are already campaigning for victory.

‘Indeed, on the basis of these election figures we must now fancy our general election chances in Brighton Kemptown and Hove more than ever.”

Government Minister to address gay sports summit in Brighton

Brighton Lesbian and Gay Sports Society (BLAGSS) welcomes Sports Minister, Gerry Sutcliffe to the city next month, to open Brighton & Hove’s first Gay Sports Summit.

The event, on Saturday June 13 at Brighton Racecourse, will attract up to 100 delegates from a network of gay and mainstream sports associations across the UK.

The summit follows last year’s inaugural event in Manchester, which was organised by Pride Sports, the UK’s only LGBT sports development organisation. It is responsible for Pride Games, Manchester’s annual multi-sport festival, which includes the only LGBT Youth Games in the world.

Louise Englefield from Pride Sports said:
“The main aim of the summit is to help gay sports groups work together to develop LGBT sports and to put them on the radar for sports councils and national governing bodies. Official bodies representing rugby, tennis, swimming and athletics were represented last time and we hope even more will come to Brighton this year.”

Tim Rose from BLAGSS, said:
“We’re delighted that Brighton is playing host to this important event. We’ll be discussing questions such as how to tackle
homophobia in sport and how to make sure that gay sportsmen and women can make the maximum contribution to Team UK’s success in the 2012 Olympics.”

During the summit, BLAGSS members will play host to the delegates by providing accommodation and showing them the city, including taking them on a gay history walk.

Shortly after the summit, BLAGSS will also support the council’s TakePart Sports Festival (June 27–July 12).

Several of its sports groups (such as swimming, bowling, rollerblading, walking and football) will open their meetings for taster sessions and BLAGSS will have a stall in Preston Park during the opening event on June 27.

BLAGSS celebrated its tenth anniversary last year. It offers its 600 members the chance to participate in more than 500 sporting events every year in disciplines such as running, cycling, swimming and badminton and many more.

Greens call for end of ban on same sex marriage

The Green Party are calling for an end to the ban on same-sex marriage in the UK and other EU member states.

Green MEPs Caroline Lucas and Jean Lambert want EU-wide same-sex marriage laws where same-sex marriage is no longer banned in any Country within the EU.

Caroline Lucas said:
“The Green Party is the only British political party that opposes the ban on same-sex civil marriage. We want marriage equality for LGBT couples. Lesbian and gay married couples should be able to move freely around Europe and have their marriages recognised on exactly the same basis as heterosexual married couples.”

Human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, who is also the Green parliamentary candidate for Oxford East, agreed with Lucas. He said:
“Most EU countries do not recognise the different same-sex partnership laws in other member states. For a majority of lesbian and gay couples their legal rights stop at their own borders. This creates lots of problems for same-sex partners who travel or move to other EU countries. It is time these laws were harmonised throughout EU to the best and most universally recognised system of partnership law, civil marriage. Anything less is second class and discrimination.”

Tories form European coalition with homophobic climate change deniers

In the run up to the EURO election, The Tories aligned themselves with the homophobic Polish regime led by homophobe, Jaroslaw Kaczynski.

Green politicians win Observer ethical awards

Human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, won Campaigner of the Year at the fourth Observer Ethical Awards in London last night (Wed 4). The runners up at the newspaper awards ceremony were celebrity chefs and TV presenters Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall and Jamie Oliver. TV and movie actor Colin Firth, one of the judges, presented Tatchell with his award.

Politician of the Year was won by Caroline Lucas, Member of the European Parliament and leader of the Green Party of England and Wales. Naturalist and TV nature programme presenter, Sir David Attenborough, was given a Lifetime Achievement Award.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Tatchell paid tribute to “the many human rights campaigners worldwide who risk their lives and freedom, in countries like Russia, Iran, Zimbabwe, Iraq and China. It is an honour to work with and support them,” he said.

Speaking after the event Mr Tatchell added:
“During the 1980s and 1990s I was often demonised by the popular press, lambasted by the political establishment and targeted for violent attack by neo-Nazis. Undeterred, I carried on campaigning. After more than 40 years of activism for gay rights and for other human rights causes, it is immensely gratifying to receive this accolade. My transition from public enemy number one to campaign award winner has been extraordinary.

“I want to thank everyone who supported me through the difficult, turbulent years when I was a minority voice and frequently reviled. Their kindness and solidarity is treasured. It gave me the strength to carry on the fight for justice and has helped bring me the recognition I have won today.

“During the last year, my campaign schedule has included arrest at the recent Gay Pride parade in Moscow, support for persecuted ethnic minorities in Iran and Pakistan, publicising the murder of LGBT Iraqis by Islamist death squads, challenging homophobia in football, assisting asylum seekers fleeing persecution, lobbying against the ban on same-sex marriage and helping secure the acquittal of two Baluch human rights campaigners who were framed on terrorism charges in London.

“I do my bit for human rights, as do many others. Together, we make the change,” he said.

HIV sector comes together to produce a social care framework

A coalition of HIV organisations has published a framework for better living with HIV in England today. The framework is one of the first documents of its kind in the world.

Commissioned from Sigma Research by Terrence Higgins Trust and developed in collaboration with many other community organisations, the framework presents a road map for social care, support and information for people diagnosed with HIV in England. It outlines the work needed to support people with HIV in three core areas - individual needs, services needs and societal need.

The framework is radical in its aspirations, outlining 17 goals to be met. These would bring the standard of social care, support and information provision in England up to the standard of clinical care that people with HIV have come to expect in this country. Given the current economic climate the authors recognise that this is ambitious, but believe that it is important to lay out what should exist in order to be able to work towards it.

The report also includes findings from a national consultation of people living with HIV which explains what they’d like from social care services in future.

The African HIV Policy Network, Black Health Agency, George House Trust, NAM, NAT (National AIDS Trust), Positively Women, Sigma Research and Terrence Higgins Trust all had input into the framework.

Theatre Review: My Fair Lady at Theatre Royal by Eric Page

The Brighton Theatre Group production of My Fair Lady opened Tuesday night on a perfect June evening.

Reading as I walked down New Road before the show that this was an ‘amateur production’ worried me, as this is my favourite musical, but there was nothing amateur about this production at all. I have seen ‘west end’ shows of less standard than this production.

The story of bachelor linguistics professor Henry Higgins' bet to turn a cockney flower girl into a social butterfly was immortalised in the film by Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn .

Crisply directed by Michael Burnie, this show delighted within the first few moments. The sets were atmospheric without being too showy and allowed lots of precious space for the energetic ensemble to dance, sing and generally whirl about.

Professor Higgins’s study was beautiful and simply done and the lighting of the show was a real treat!

The costumes by Jackie Crier were stunning and her use of ‘court morning’ colours in the terrific Ascot scene a tribute to her creative art and also the depth of research that has gone into this production.

To compete with Cecil Beaton and hold your own is no mean feat, but lights, wigs, costumes, sets and bodies on stage don’t make a good musical, it’s the music and dance numbers.

David Morley as Professor Higgins and Ian Gledhill as Colonel Pickering were the most perfectly matched pair of gents on stage. David breathing real stubborn charm into the Professor and his handling of some of the songs was masterful. Ian’s Colonel being a real treat of understated humour and charm, he got a lot of wonderfully ‘knowing’ laughs from the audience and my companion- a Welsh lady of some refinement - adored him.

His ‘sash moment’ was inspired! Rosie Evans as Eliza was not quite as rough or quite as polished as I’d have liked Miss Doolittle to be, but she did very well and her voice has great promise. Everyone else in the theatre loved her. She was, however, very very funny, her ‘Ascot’ scene perfectly delivered.

Special mention for Hilary Reeves as Karpathy and Ann Atkins as Mrs Pearce for their sheer humour and fun.

This is a musical that everyone knows and loves and harder to pull off because of it. However, number after number was deftly handled by the slick combos of musical director (and conductor) Simon Grey and choreographer Nathan Potter. The choral numbers were perfectly done. Special mention for the Servants’ Chorus which left me tingling, and the endless chirpy and never still Cock’er’ny’s.

The complex, fun and energetic dance numbers were a joy to watch and the cast were obviously having as much fun as the audience were watching them.

On the down side, I’d cut the ‘Flash-Stomp’ dance routine which was overcomplicated, sort out the sound a little and stiffen the odd set up, but these are small things to moan about in a show that’s got so much going for it.

The packed house loved it and gave the cast a standing ovation.

If you like your musicals full of threats, domestic violence, drunkenness, outrageous snobbery, terrible misogyny, a little light racism and a smattering of the undeserving poor, then you’re gonna love this.

This show plays for a week so get your tickets for this accomplished and happy production now.

Greens top poll for LGBT rights

The Green Party has topped a poll of all political parties challenging the European elections. The poll was conduced by pinknews.co.uk. The Greens received 28% with Conservative 23% and Labour 20%.

Phelim Mac Cafferty on behalf of LGBT Greens said:
“In a period of time when statistics from police authorities show large increases in violent trans and homophobic crime, it will take strong voices to ensure that prejudice is shown the red card throughout Europe.

"Greens have topped this poll because of the hard work our MEPs deliver on behalf of the LGBT communities but now the race is on to ensure we boost the Green vote until the close of polls on Thursday.”

Human rights activist and Green Party parliamentary candidate for Oxford East Peter Tatchell also commented:
"I am not surprised that the Greens have topped the poll. Britain's two Green MEPs - Caroline Lucas and Jean Lambert - have been at the forefront promoting LGBT human rights in the European Parliament. The Greens are unique. We are the only party that is calling for an end to the ban on same-sex marriage in the UK and the rest of Europe. It is only the Greens who are pushing for the legalisation of same-sex civil marriage throughout the EU.

"More and more people realise that the Greens represent a fresh, clean, progressive alternative to the tainted big three parties. We are not just an environmental protection party. We are also the party of democracy, human rights, civil liberties and social justice."
