City Councillor Responds

The Pink News website sadly seeks to raise issues about the planned AIDS Memorial for Brighton. They did so without talking to me. To set the record straight, I do feel they are barking up the wrong tree. Yes of course there are differences of opinion within the community on this, like every other issue. But what Pink news is failing to acknowledge is that over 1,000 people came together to support this campaign and take the proposal forward. These proposals are at a very early stage, and they jump the gun somewhat in terms of reports of meetings and invitations. Anyone who would like further details can email me at paul.elgood@brighton-hove.gov.uk The consultation is being led by Cllr Simon Burgess, the Leader of Brighton and Hove Council, who I am sure will ensure that all voices are heard. Each year I hear literally dozens of concerns relating to various activities in the community. There would never be a Pride, for example, if these issues stopped it in its tracks. As for the fundraising, well people are free to give as they choose, for what they choose and the SIDS Memorial project should be viewed as a one off short term project. During this I continue to support the various charities in the AIDS/HIV sector and when launching the project we urged others to do likewise. I hope this clear up any of these misunderstandings.
Cllr Paul Elgood
