Feeling like Mr Eno’s been left to play with a huge box of old speakers, breeze blocks and wire with comfy armchairs, potted trees and some discarded glitter balls thrown in this is a real curates egg of an installation.
It’s a little odd, a little engaging and a little too small too, but I enjoyed roaming around the carcass of the Grade One Listed Marlborough House on Old Steine as much as I did fiddling with Mr Eno’s
‘soun.d flowers’ Some of them were not working, and some (I discovered from talking to the ushers) were unfinished!
Really Mr Eno, I imagine you got a hefty sum of groats from the festival for this so it’s only polite to finish the wiring before you open the show. The mirror ball installation, which should be a moving thing, was static because of this unfinishedness. A bit of a cowboy installationist aren’t ya?
Anyway, this is fun and if you take it at face value a nice way to spend some time reflecting, relaxing and generally ambling about this interesting old house. With its old mouldings, radiators and attractive rooms the building is a treasure and it’s a real shame it’s not been brought back into public use, keep your eyes out for the wild and retro wallpaper that’s still on some of the walls!
There’s plenty of space to recline, relax and even lay down on an astro turf lawn and let your mind wander and ponder on eccentric rock stars, festivals and what a lovely place this city can be.
Till 30th May. Marlborough House, Old Steine.
