An exhibition that looks at climate change from the point of view of the city’s residents and those in developing countries is currently showing in Churchill Square.

The photographic exhibition links stories from different countries with experiences from Brighton & Hove. It shows how ordinary people are being affected by climate change and how they are adapting their lives or are taking action, either individually or as a community.

Stories from Brighton & Hove include the Coldean Community Allotments,  Moulsecoomb  Primary School ’s environment club and a Portslade family taking practical steps to reduce their impact on the environment.

From the rest of the world, the project has gathered the experiences of people living with extreme weather, including flooding in  Bolivia and  Bangladesh and drought in  Peru and Kenya.

The Climate Connections exhibition was launched at Jubilee Square at the end of March 2010 and is part of a wider project involving Brighton Peace & Environment Centre, Brighton & Hove City Council and Oxfam GB.

Council leader and chairman of the city’s sustainability committee Mary Mears said:
“The project seems particularly relevant now with the devastating floods in  Australia and Brazil. It highlights real people and their experiences of dealing with the effects of climate change.

“It also shows the small practical steps we can all take to help the environment. As a council we are committed to creating stronger communities and supporting sustainability.”

The Climate Connections exhibition runs until February 6. There will be an update on the project at the Sustainability Cabinet on February 9.
