This eagerly awaited restaurant, which replaces Barney’s on Western Road, is headed up by Brighton based duo Ben Ranger & Head Chef Steve Beadle (who honed his culinary skills at The River Café). They have stripped it back, scrubbed it raw and brought this lively, friendly new venue to this busy end of Hove.

The warm, open and bright interior is full of earthy colours, exposed wooden floors, wicker chairs and subtle lighting for a modern feel. Those lovely large windows provide the perfect setting for on this inviting end of Western Road. It used to be one of my favorite places to eat, sip coffee and watch the endless variety of Hoves inmates roll past, but then the dark days hit but now these lads have worked hard to restore a little contemporary comfort and glamour to this large venue. I loved it.

An affordable European a la carte Menu with the emphasis on locally sourced food. Current hearty dishes include Seared scallops with cauliflower puree, crispy pancetta and sage; Slow braised shoulder of lamb and colcannon; Sticky date pudding, toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream. There are also breakfast, set lunch, children & toddlers menus – and a monthly seasonal menu, all in all a great range.

Sunday lunch is £13.50 - the highlight being the 9-hour slow-roasted rib of beef. Superb.

Hove Kitchen aims for some understated quality whether you are dining or drinking. They also have the most sublime pianist I’ve heard this year, last night she was astonishingly good improvising (on request!) mashing up Debussy & Autumn leaves, Bach and Lady Gaga, quite brilliant and the perfect back drop to some good conversation and excellent wine. She’s called Amanda Bes and I suspect will go far, check her out here: I’ll be heading in to catch her again when she’s playing, she really was very good.

The restaurant plan ‘Cappuccino & Babyccino’ mornings where a qualified nursery assistant will entertain your child(ren) in the restaurant’s contained play area from Jan 2011 and they have just launched their Xmas menu!

If the quality of the food and musicians continues to be this high, I can see this place being a real hit. There was a wide range of punters there, all ages, types and slightly on the sophisticated side.
